Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
